This FBI Rebrand is a tongue-in-cheek way to reimagine the service provided by the FBI. Inspired by the CIA’s rebrand to draw in a younger audience of recruits, this reimagining plays on nostalgia and current trends in true crime entertainment to get people involved in investigation.
THE PROCESS
This project was designed as a three prong approach to re-envisioning a service.
The first prong was to reimagine the visual aspect. Maintaining everything else about this platform I created new assets and established a new aesthetic. I leaned into a very nostalgic 90’s Sci-Fi aesthetic to draw in a younger audience. I figured if most people’s persception of the FBI was shaped by the media they consumed featuring the organization, why not lean into it?
The second prong then was to reimagine the structure of the platform. The website was pretty cluttered and dense with information. There wasn’t any reprieve from information from the moment you landed on the home page. If my goal was for more young people to utilize the service then I needed to make the platform less busy and more inviting. I reduced a lot of the redundancies of information featured on the page and created a nesting navigation bar. The home page would be reduced to a feature highlighting the highest traffic for the wesbite: applications, tip submissions, etc.
The third prong of this project was to reimagine the platform of the service. Supplemental to the website that has been transformed I created an app that would allow for this new, younger, media-inspired audience to engage with the services of the FBI in a novel new way. The main function of this “Investigators” app is to dispel misinformation associated with the FBI. The paranormal is addressed in the DEBUNKED feature which reports the FBI’s official statements on phenomenon speculated to be the work of extraterrestrials, cryptids, and other such beings. The TRUE CRIME goes over some of the most well known and well documented cases of horrific and mysterious crimes. These articles aim to be as objective as possible while centering the humanity of the victims that make these cases such a tragedy. There are reminders that encourage readers to take breaks and reflect. I really wanted to pander to a well established audience of true crime enjoyers while addressing some of the more unsavory aspects of that community. I didn’t want to encourage this grandious mythologizing and conspiracy that can make people forget that a real person experienced these things and the family of the victims are still suffering. For those who are unsatisfied with the information on these cold cases (or lack thereof) the app also invites these “investigators” to apply to be an agent or submit any tips that may change everything.
